The diesel engine is the core in the field of engineering machine power plants. While both at home and abroad for the cold start of diesel engine, the transient emission characteristics below 0 °C and above 2000m is almost a blank. Therefore, aimed at high altitude and low-temperature environment emission characteristics of cold start, this article has carried on the systematic analysis and research. In this paper, a simulation test system for the cold start of the diesel engine at low temperature at high altitude is established. The cold start experiments of a heavy diesel engine at different ambient temperatures (10°C, 0°C, -10°C and -20°C) and different altitudes (0m, 3000m, and 4000m) is carried out. In this paper, the gas emission of the diesel engine during the speed-up period of cold start is studied.

Diesel engine is vital in the industry for its characteristics of low fuel consumption, high-torque, reliability, and durability. Existing diesel engine technology has reached the upper limit. It is difficult to break through the fuel consumption and emission of diesel engines. VVA (Variable Valve Actuation) is a new technology in the field of the diesel engines. In this paper, GT-Suite and ANN (artificial neural network) model are established based on engine experimental data and DoE simulation results. By inputting Intake Valve Opening crake angle (IVO), Intake Valve Angle Multiplier (IVAM) and Exhaust Valve Angle Multiplier (EVAM) into the ANN Model, and by using SA (simulated annealing algorithm), the optimized results of intake and exhaust valve lift under the target conditions are obtained.

2022-01-0698
With the degradation of lithium-ion batteries, the battery safety performance changes, which further influences the safe working window. In this paper, the pouch ternary lithium-ion battery whose rated capacity is 4.2 Ah is used as the research object to investigate the impact of the high-temperature calendar and cyclic aging on tolerance performance. The overcharge-to-thermal-runaway test is performed on the fresh cell and aged cell (90% SOH). The inflection point of voltage for aged cells appears earlier than that of the fresh cell, while the voltage corresponding to the inflection point is the same for them, which means that the voltage at which lithium plating occurs is the same. However, the voltage plateau and the crest voltage before thermal runaway of aged cell are significantly higher than that of the fresh cell. Besides, ohmic heat, reversible heat, and side reaction heat make contribution to the thermal runaway triggering.

2022-01-0693
To improve the durability of Proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) in actual transportation application scenario, the research on fault diagnosis of PEMFC is receiving extensive attention. With the development of artificial intelligence, performing fault diagnosis with the massive sampling data of the fuel cell system has become a popular research topic. But few people have successfully verified the diagnosis performance of these artificial intelligence algorithms on a real high power on-board PEMFC system. Therefore, we intend to make a step forward with these data-driven artificial intelligence algorithms. We applied four data-driven artificial intelligence algorithms to diagnose three common faults of PEMFC (each fault type has two severity levels, slight and severe). AVL CRUISE M was firstly applied for generation of simulation fault dataset to speed up the algorithm screening process. Based on the dataset, these algorithms are trained and optimized.

2022-01-0694
Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system is considered as one of the most popular power sources because of its high energy density, fast dynamic response and zero pollution. However, the start-up at low temperature (e.g. - 30 °C) is still a major challenge for its wide application due to water freezing in Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA). In this paper, a cold start test process in an environment cabin with auxiliary heat was carried out for a full power automotive PEMFC system, including normal operation, shutdown purge and cold start processes analysis from -30°C. Rated power of this stack is 100kW at the current density of 1.4A/cm2 and relevant maximum output power can reach to 120kW. In order to reduce the damage of high potential to MEA, on-load purge with a current of 30A is conducted to removing extra water in stack for improving cold start ability. Based on corresponding control strategy, cold start was realized successfully within 110s.

2022-01-0706
High-nickel lithium-ion batteries extend the driving mileage of electric vehicles (EVs) to 600km without much cost increment. However, thermal accidents commonly occur due to their poor thermal stability, such as thermal runaway. To address the issue, a comprehensive analysis of the thermal runaway behavior of high-nickel lithium-ion batteries with different specifications is conducted. The thermal runaway process is divided into five stages based on self-heating generation, voltage drop, safety valve rupture, and thermal runaway triggering for the three tested cells. The three tested cells demonstrate similar behaviors during each stage of the thermal runaway process. However, there are still apparent differences between their characteristics. This study analyses the thermal runaway features from the following aspects: (i) characteristic temperature; (ii) the relationship between sudden voltage drop and characteristic temperatures; (iii) temperature recovery; (iv) thermodynamics.

With the strict requirements of harmful emission regulations, carbon peaking and neutralization goal, the internal combustion engine (ICE) industry is facing great challenges. Compared with pure ICE powertrain, hybrid powertrain has the advantages on fuel consumption and harmful emissions, which is more suitable for the market today. In series hybrid powertrain, because of the direct mechanical connection between ICE and motor, the motor can be used as an assistant in optimizing the performance of ICE. In order to realize the cycle-based or crank angle-based control of ICE, a high-frequency motor control system need to be built. Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) has the characteristics of high calculation frequency and high reliability to meet the demand. At the same time, the ICE control based on LabVIEW and FPGA has been realized.

Simulation Study on the Influence of the Shielding Mechanism of the Battery Pack Shell on the Vehicle Radiation Emission

2021-04-06
2021-01-0149
From the perspective of the three elements of electromagnetic interference, the main function of shielding is to cut off the propagation path of electromagnetic noise. The battery pack casing can be regarded as shielding the electromagnetic interference conducted on its internal and external wiring harnesses, but because the battery pack casing has power lines in and out, the battery pack casing is an incomplete shield. In the field of electromagnetics, shielding can be divided into electrical shielding, magnetic shielding and electromagnetic shielding. Therefore, this paper studies its influence on the electromagnetic radiation emission of the whole vehicle from the perspective of shielding mechanism. Due to the role of the switch components in the power battery system, strong current fluctuation di/dt and voltage fluctuation dv/dt will be generated on the power cable, and these interferences will have an important impact on the radiation emission of the vehicle.

Low heat rejection (LHR) combustion has been recognized as a potential technology for further fuel economy improvement. This paper aims to simulate how the piston top’s thermal barrier coating affects the engine’s thermal efficiency and emissions. Accordingly, a Thin-wall heat transfer model in AVL Fire software was employed. The effects of increasing the piston top surface temperature, comparing different thermal barrier coating material, were simulated at the engine’s rated power operating point, so as the piston top’s surface roughness. In comparison to a standard diesel engine, the indicated thermal efficiency (ITE) could increase by 0.4% when the surface temperature of the piston top changed from 575K to 775K.

2021-01-0746
The cold-start of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has been one of the technical challenges for fuel cell vehicle table ommercialization. In this study, a one-dimensional cold start transient model of PEMFC was developed for the transfer of water, heat, electrons and protons during the cold start process. Different loading modes, including constant voltage, constant current, and current ramping, were adopted for fuel cell cold starting analysis, respectively. The internal water-heat transfer within fuel cell was investigated under different loading modes. The results show that in the constant current mode, for the high current, the cold start process can produce more heat than other modes, which can increase fuel cell temperature rapidly. However, this process may easily fail before the ice fully covers the cathode catalyst layers (CL).

Experimental Investigation of Control Strategies on Voltage Inconsistency for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

2021-04-06
2021-01-0736
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) is considered the most promising alternative vehicle power in the future owing to its highly power density and zero carbon emission. However, Voltage inconsistency of PEMFC is an essential issue that influences the performance of a PEMFC. It is affected by flow-rate and relative humidity of the inlet air. It’s necessary to establish a control strategy to ensure air supplied timely. A PEMFC system bench with 30 cells (the cells are numbered 1-30 in the direction from near to far from the air intake port) assembled in series was established to investigate the control strategy of air supply system. According to fuel cell’s position of the lowest voltage and the corresponding air flow rate, there are three different operations as follows. When it appears not in the low numbered area and the air flow rate is high, it indicates that humidity of the cell is insufficient and it needs to reduce power of the blower or close the bypass-valve.

2021-01-0738
Cold start remains a major obstacle to the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), however, there are few studies on the cold start characteristics, especially at a complicated stack level. In this study, a novel layer-lumped numerical model with higher computational efficiency is proposed to investigate the cold start behavior of PEMFC stack, in which phase transition, heat transfer and electrochemical reaction are comprehensively considered. Besides, phase transition mechanisms are reconstructed based on the assumption that super-cooled water exists within the cell. With this model, the inconsistency of the stack temperature distribution and output performance is presented, some constant loading voltage strategies are investigated, and a linear variable controlling voltage strategy is developed.

Active Launch Vibration Control of Power-Split Hybrid Electric Vehicle Considering Nonlinear Backlash

2021-04-06
2021-01-0667
The backlash between engaging components in a driveline is unavoidable, especially when the gear runs freely and collides with the backlash, the impact torque generated increases the vibration amplitude. The power-split hybrid electric vehicle generates output torque only from the traction motor during the launching process. The nonlinear backlash can greatly influence the driveability of the driveline due to the rapid response of the traction motor and the lack of the traditional clutches and torsional shock absorbers in the powertrain. This paper focuses on the launch vibration of the power-split hybrid electric vehicle, establishes a nonlinear driveline model considering gear backlash, including an engine, two motors, a Ravigneaux planetary gear set, a reducer, a differential, a backlash assembly, half shafts, and wheels.

Review on State of Health Definition in Relation to Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells in Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles

2021-04-06
2021-01-0735
Owing to its advantages of high energy density, quick start-up, and no emissions, the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is one of the most promising power sources in transportation and has been used for automotive application for years. However, shortcomings in fuel cell key performances, such as lifetime and efficiency, characterized by state of health (SOH), restrict the large-scale commercialization for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV), raising demands for real-time state monitoring. Nowadays, most researchers have explored the reasons for state change from models or experiments. Nevertheless, it is in need of system-level researches on definition methods of SOH against the actual automotive application. Lacking accurate quantitative indicators, existing studies on health states are often qualitative and hence fail to consider intermediate processes.

2021-01-0785
In this paper, in order to avoid the frequent switching of engine operating points and improve the fuel economy during driving, this paper proposes a control strategy for the 4-wheel drive (4WD) hybrid vehicle based on wavelet transform. First of all, the system configuration and the original control strategy of the 4WD hybrid vehicle were introduced and analyzed, which summarized the shortcomings of this control strategy. Then, based on the analyze of the original control strategy, the wavelet transform was used to overcome its weaknesses. By taking advantage over the superiority of the wavelet transform method in multi signal disposition, the demand power of vehicle was decomposed into the stable drive power and the instantaneous response power, which were distributed to engine and electric motor respectively. This process was carried out under different driving modes.
